Mattawan High School Reviews

I graduated in 08', awesome school and it helped prepare me for college in a way I can't explain. I am now an Aviation Administration Major and a Air Force ROTC major and it has gotten me through some times. Thank you Mattawan, you are an inspiration to me and so many others.

Tiny facilities, too few teachers, too low budget, horrible students.

This school must have gotten worse since the alumni were there because I've yet to notice many of the positive aspects of the school. In my one year here, I've experienced rude teachers that fail to understand people who's personalities are different from theirs, rude students, and a mediocre administration that feels as if they're attempting to play catch up. While I would go deeper into these points, I shall hold off a final opinion until I become a junior and perhaps change, but as of now this school isn't looking to be as good as it lets on. On the plus side, the music program's great. It's a bit too intense for those who aren't completely dedicated towards band, so unless band's a large part of your child's life, I'd recommend they not take it as the program's only for those willing to invest most of their spare time into it.

I am a Mattawan alumni from 1981 with four children currently attending Mattawan from K through 12. I have found that Mattawan has been consistent in being proactive about meeting goals and standards for education. I have found the Early Elementary to be run by an excellent principal, staff and teachers all commited to excellence in education for children of this age group. These educators truly love what they do and it shows. I can provide nothing but positive feedback an know that when I send my children out each day, they are well attended and educated. The current economy affects our schools and its programs and I think it is incumbent upon us as parents to step up to the plate and volunteer our time however that is possible to enhance the existing programs. Our children are the future of tomorrow.

Mattawan is an excellent school. I have children in both 10th and 7th grade, both in band. The music program at Mattawan is by far the best in the entire area. Although they do not have orchestra, the band and choir programs are first class. The band has won numerous awards, such as 'Grand Champion' for their marching band and consistent high marks at contests. We are enjoying an excellent, well rounded, educational experience in Mattawan.

Mattawan was the best school for my son. He excelled in all academic areas by taking advantage of the AP and Honors classes available. I can't say enough good things about the instrumental music program. Mattawan did a great job of preparing him for the rigors of the University of Michigan.

We moved to the Mattawan area for the school system. Our children are now in the 10th and 6th grade. We have been very grateful for the great education and experience Mattawan has given to us.

I love to sent my children to school evrey day. They always come home happy wanting to go tomarrow!

Overall, Mattawan schools are above average. The surrounding area and town is nice, however, the recent growth and development is having its toll on the schools. Student/teacher ratios are growing and allowing for less oversight. As a result, substance abuse such as smoking, alcohol, and some drug use are becoming significantly more common.

My son has attended Mattawan as an exchange student for the past year, and he has enjoyed the experience thoroughly. The teachers are always available for advice and the pupils have made him feel so welcome that he now has made friends for life. I would recommend Mattawan to any parent thinking of sending their children there.

While Mattawan has a proven academic track record, it is not without its challenges and weaknesses. Explosive growth in the area has left the school system scrambling to accommodate and struggling to maintain the virtues that originally attracted so many people to the area. Drugs and alcohol are a serious problem, especially in the high school. And the student/teacher ratio makes it difficult to maintain the 'personal attention' and 'family atmosphere' that were once hallmarks of this school system. There are still many good people and much to love in Mattawan -- but do not move there expecting perfection. The community and the schools face the same challenges as nearly every other neighboring community.

Mattawan is a great town, which adds to the level of the school system. Not only is the high school a clean, safe, and well-built environment, but the teachers and other staff there are great. Each teacher brings their own personality to this school. Where else could you find a Vietnam vet who wears leather and pony-tailed hair, not to mention a vice-principal and director of student activities that dresses up like rappers for homecoming? I loved being a student at Mattawan. The level of intellect and involvement is amazing. Mattawan has some of the highest testing results in the state of Michigan, and has even produced a few students whom have/are attending Harvard. University of Michigan, MI State, Columbia, Eastern MI, and many others are just a few of the schools that past students are now attending. MHS is certainly a school all new parents should consider.
